Youthline Client Privacy Statement – Summary for children and
young people
1. This tells you what we will do with your info
The law says we have to tell you things about the health information we collect about you and how we use it. We have taken the important bits of our Client Privacy Statement and summarised them here, to help you understand more about what we will do with your info. You can always learn more by reading the full privacy statement, asking your parent or guardian to check it for you, or talking to us about it.
2. We support young people throughout Aotearoa New Zealand
We are a "with youth, for youth" organisation. Youthline’s purpose is to strengthen hauora through youth voice and youth choice. Within Youthline hauora means “health and wellbeing”. Youthline supports young people throughout Aotearoa New Zealand. We have been providing support to Kiwis aged between 12-24 years for more than 50 years.
3. We only collect the info we really need
We need to collect health information about you to help you. This might include your name, contact details, date of birth, gender or pronouns, information about your health (including your mental health), information about your whānau, and – of course – information about your life and feelings.
4. We only use your info to support you and people like you
We only use health information to do the things you have asked us to, to help and support you, and to keep you and others safe. This includes making sure we understand your situation and needs, delivering the services you ask for, staying in touch with you, and learning more about how we can help all young people to thrive.
5. We only share your info with others when we really need to
It is really important that you know you can trust us to protect your information. But sometimes we may need to share information about you with other people who want to help you, like doctors, youth workers, your school, or your whānau. We will only do this if we think it will help to keep you safe and well, and we will talk to you first if we can.
6. We will be careful about talking to your parents or guardians about you
If you are under 16, your parents or guardians may have a right to see information we hold about you, but we will not share your information with your parents or guardians if we do not think it’s in your best interests to do so. In this case we will remove the health information about you that your parent and guardian should not see. You can tell us if you are worried about us talking to your parents or guardians.
7. You can talk to us about your info any time
You, or your parent or guardian, can ask us for a copy of your health information at any time, and you can ask us to fix your information if you think it is wrong. You can also talk to us about your information if you are worried about how we are using it. Talk to your the Youthline staff member who is working with you, or call us on 09 376 6645 or email us at privacy@youthline.co.nz, and we will get things sorted for you.
