Parents and Whānau

Information and support for parents and whānau

Little known fact: Youthline services are available for parents and family members supporting young people.

This includes all of our free and affordable counselling services. If you don't find what you're looking for here, give us a call, text us, email us or chat with us and we'll do what we can to connect you to the right information or resource. In some parts of the country we also provide individual and family therapy face to face.

We are happy to chat with parents, grandparents, friends, whānau, teachers, coaches and more. Being supported as the support person is incredibly important.

Youthline has been supporting young people and their families since 1970. In that time we've had a lot of conversations, and have come up with some answers to common questions. Browse this section and download information for yourself or check out our Advice Hub - we wrote it for young people but the information is useful no matter your age.

We also work with some really amazing organisations who specialise in parenting.

Common Ground

Common Ground is a website for parents, whānau and friends – to recognise and understand the difficult situations that young people go through in their lives, and understand the support system a young person might have around them.

Being a support person for a distressed teenager or a young person who is experiencing a mental illness can be a difficult road without any support around you. Common Ground is a collaboration of Youthline, the Mental Health Foundation, Skylight and Curative.
