Auckland Community Programmes

Personal Development Programme

This programme is run in conjunction with Action Education and serves as the first step in the journey towards becoming a counsellor on the Youthline Helpline, but people may choose to attend this as a stand-alone course for their own personal growth and to improve their self awareness and communication skills (and to have a really interesting experience and meet lots of great people).

It is a lively and varied programme, using experiential activities, games, discussions and a bit of interesting theory to give you lots of opportunities to find out more about yourself and build better communication and relationship-building skills as well. It is also great for helping you learn more about working in a team, managing difference and conflict, building self esteem and confidence, goal setting and trust.

Personal Development is open to all people 17 years and over.

Youth Advisory Group

A Youth Advisory Group (YAG) is a group of young people who provide input or undertake tasks for organisations, services, or projects related to youth. It is about giving you an opportunity to participate meaningfully in things that affect you and helping organisations and services to get it right when working with youth.

You don’t need any special experience or skills to join a YAG, just an interest in having your say and supporting your community. The YAG is facilitated by Youthline youth workers who will support the group to develop the right skills to complete projects.

What do they do?

A YAG works on range of stuff like:
  • Creating youth friendly health information or promotional material
  • Creating community murals or art pieces
  • Commenting on youth issues through poetry, film or online media
  • Developing website content
  • Involvement in youth research projects
  • Advising on service design
  • Advising on ways to connect with youth
  • Organising performances or events

The deets....
  • YAGs are free to join
  • Open to 13-24 year olds
  • Takes about 4 hours a month
  • Looks awesome on your CV
  • Gives you a chance to influence what happens in your community
  • Develops leadership and project management skills
  • An opportunity to meet new people

Activ8

Activ8 is an eight week leadership development and counselling skills programme for 16-18 year olds wanting to make difference in their community.

By the end of the programme, participants will have:

  • Explored and and challenged the way young people are portrayed by the community
  • Learnt how to take care of number one (which we need to do before we can offer a hand to others)
  • Explored strengths-based counselling and the six principles of youth development and how such theory is applied in text-counselling.
  • Practiced skills through group work and supported other young people on the texting Helpline alongside a Supervisor
  • Increased their self-awareness
  • Identified a cause or need in the community and been given the opportunity to respond to this

This is an after school programme that runs once a semester. Contact us to find out more about participating.
