Spoken Word Poetry

In recent years we have seen the exponential growth of spoken word poetry in popular culture. Young people in particular have connected with this media and have found a platform to share their opinions, voice and stories.

Action Education offers a variety of Spoken Word Poetry programmes that can be delivered over a series of weeks, or as one-off workshops. We have a variety of themes that we work with and can also cater to the specific needs of your group. The programmes are designed to give young people the tools and confidence to be able to articulate their own journey, experiences and world view. They can be delivered in a wide range of community settings and within schools - we cover all age ranges from pre-school through to secondary schools. When working in High Schools our programmes can be aligned to The New Zealand Curriculum for English if requested.

Action Education is proud to have the experienced and professional facilitators of the South Auckland Poets Collective leading these dynamic youth development programmes in partnership.

We also provide professional development in this area and training in the use of our spoken word best practice guide. If this is of interest please contact us to sign up for Professional Development opportunities.

Professional Development

We provide professional development workshops around the country. We provide training for youth workers, teachers, artists, tutors and social workers.

We also facilitate workshops for large corporate groups, small and medium sized businesses and professional sports teams.

All of our training is practical and action based, using creative and experiential learning tools and activities.

Some of the topics we can cover include:
  • Leadership
  • Personal and group identity; building a positive team/group culture
  • Youth Advisory and Participation Processes
  • Youth Development Strategy in Practice
  • Youth Worker Code of Ethics
  • Facilitating Groups with Young People
  • Spoken Word Best Practice when Working with Young People
  • The Power of Story Telling
  • Self-Care, Ethics and Boundaries

If you're interested in a topic you don't see listed here, please get in touch. We often work on custom pieces of training and can tailor our delivery to suit your needs.

Personal Development

This programme serves as the first step in the pathway towards becoming a counsellor, a youth worker or other help profession, however many people choose to attend this as a stand-alone course for their own personal growth and to improve their self-awareness and communication skills and to have a really interesting experience connecting with lots of great people.

We facilitate personal development programmes in the community across North Shore, Waitakere, Manukau and Central Auckland. These programmes provide an environment to enable participants to enhance their self-esteem and their interpersonal relating styles, develop leadership and conflict resolution skills and their relationship building capacity.
