With the top of the building fully enclosed and the roof going on, the full extent of the centre is now visible and inside the completed wall framing makes each space definable.
In addition to the café/hospitality space and digital areas, our other vision includes unlocking creativity through the inclusion of a youth art gallery and dance practice/performance area.
Youth art will be a feature in the décor of the building and we have a number of areas that we will be engaging with young people to create artwork for.
In addition, the ‘welcome area’ of the building will double as a youth art gallery with regular exhibitions aimed at providing a space for youth to showcase their talents and further develop their creative skills.
A significant area of the existing concrete and rimu floor on the ground level of the centre is being restored to match the floor of the south east meeting room which will be completed with recycled rimu. This meeting room will double as a dance space and we are also looking at obtaining a portable dance floor that can be utilised for events, on and offsite.
In addition our Manukau Youth Advisory Group (YAG) are scoping out the inclusion of a ‘cultural room’ that will be a combined representation of the different cultures in the South Auckland area, designed and decorated with the lead of the YAG.
All of the YLMCD visions and the youth development pathways they create, align with the eight outcomes of the CMDHB Manukau Model of Youth Development. Our additional aim to develop the social enterprise scope of the centre will help ensure the centre’s future viability operationally, and we look forward to developing this innovative area of the organisation.
