PFLAG South and Youthline Otago have joined forces in 2009 to bring you the PFLAG Same-Difference youth group.
Same-Difference is a support and social group for people 20 and under who identify as gay, lesbian, bisexual, trans, takataapui, intersex or who are questioning their sexual orientation, gender identity or sex.
The group aims to create a safe and friendly place for queer and questioning youth, their friends and family, to provide a public space for queer youth to be out and proud, and to provide a social space where queer and questioning youth can meet one another.
The group operates in two forums: a social coffee group, and a more structured social group.
The Same-Difference coffee group started up for 2009 on Friday, 20 February and runs every 3rd Friday of the month, from 5.30-7.30pm at a local café. It’s open to queer and questioning youth, their friends and family. The coffee group is an unstructured informal space where youth can socialise, facilitated by the PFLAG youth coordinator and a Youthline Otago community education volunteer.
The Same-Difference group happens the first Friday of every month, starting in 2009 on 6 March, 5.30-7.30pm, at local community rooms. This group is specifically for queer and questioning youth 20 and under. It is a more structured group that encourages commitment from the group to attend each session. It’s a chance to get together and discuss things that interest queer youth, have a sense of community, meet new people, and offer peer support. Once more, this group is facilitated by the PFLAG youth coordinator and a Youthline community education volunteer.
