Firstly we would like to say a huge thank you to our funders for providing us with the opportunity to allow the exciting plans for Youth Health Councils in 2011.
Initially this project was funded by the Counties Manukau District Health Board and now the ASB Community Trust have backed the project for 3 years allowing Youth Health Councils to develop in the wider Auckland area.
2011 is a big year for Youth Health Councils, engagement with schools, nurses, health providers and the community is well underway from 2010. Interest from existing Youth Health Councils in the support that Youthline can provide and also by schools wanting to set up Youth Health Councils has been very well received.
The main goal of the Youth Health Councils is to improve the health status of youth and raise awareness and interest in health careers.
We kickstart 2011 with the F.R.E.S.H Youth Health Councils Fono on 31st March.
The purpose of the fono is to:
-bring together members of existing and new YHC’s to equip themselves for their 2011 plans and projects
-to inspire them in their venture to make positive change
-create a community between the different YHC’s to support each other throughout the year
We have some exciting partnerships with organisations that believe in the positive impact a Youth Health Council can have, not only on a community or school but also on the members of the council and the opportunities that can unfold.
These partnerships include:
Subway Manukau have a loyalty programme with Youthline Manukau so that we are able to provide healthy meals for events and meetings as they support the ethos of YHC’s.
Diabetes Projects Trust supports YHC’s and have been an important collaboration partner with engagement and supporting projects.
AUT Manukau campus are looking at the possibilty of providing venue space and tertiary studies opportunities.
School workshops with YHC’s will be a main activity for the Youthline Manukau team, seeing us engaged on the ground level with our young people to support their work in YHC’s.
