Youth creativity goes on display this May with the Youthline National Art Exhibition at the Artstation in Ponsonby.

Organised by Youthline, the exhibition opens May 18th to 29th and involves a selection of art works capturing what makes young people in Aotearoa/New Zealand strong and resilient, whether it be their friends, family, community, work, study, spirituality, hobbies, sport, music, or a combination of these things.

“Youthline’s aim is to create communities that support young people to achieve their potential. The exhibition gives young people from all backgrounds a chance to come together to create art, express what it means to be a young person and be acknowledged for their contribution,” says Youthline Auckland CEO Stephen Bell.

The exhibition will show case entries from Youthline's 2010 Youth Art Competition, as well as top entries from previous years.

The annual competition is open to all New Zealanders under the age of 26, and will be judged in three prize categories for junior, senior and tertiary/community entrants. Prizes include a range of items including a digital camera, Apple iPod, art supply vouchers and other prizes sponsored by Hannahs, Jay Jays, Mr. Vintage, Gordon Harris and The Swing Station.

A youth art development programme funded by Auckland City Creative Communities and facilitated by Youthline, has been held at the Artstation in a ten week after school programme leading up to the competition. Young people interested in exploring different art mediums were nominated from schools in Youthline’s Youth Transition Services (YTS) area to take part. Artworks from the program will be entered into the competition and exhibition.

“We have been fortunate this year to have the support of the Auckland City Council Creative Communities funding, Art Station and a range of sponsors who have shown their support for this initiative. It’s a great opportunity for young people to reflect on, express themselves artistically, and share with others, their strengths and views on the positive things happening in their lives”, says art competition organiser Wendy Cuiffe.
