Two schoolgirls on the North Shore are helping to save lives across New Zealand by staging a variety concert and donating the proceeds to Youthline.

Lois Gregory and Monica Judge, both Year 8 students at Murrays Bay Intermediate, have planned and executed the entire event themselves, with support from family, friends and teachers.

The event has been called “Time to Shine” and showcases some of the fantastic talent at Murrays Bay Intermediate. It takes place in the school hall at 1:30pm on Friday 9th September and students have been given time off by their teachers to attend.

Lois and Monica seem blissfully unaware of their achievement in having organised such a large scale, multi-facetted event. “It’s been a lot of fun putting it all together” say Lois and Monica, “and we thought Youthline was a worthwhile cause to raise money for.”

The concert will feature over 12 acts that incorporate singers, dancers (including a 21 piece hip-hop crew), musicians and performance artists.

“We love it when young people are motivated to do something as exciting and rewarding as putting on a show for their peers” says Youthline’s fundraising representative, Amanda Carter. “The fact that they are also raising money for us is just icing on the cake – the real kicker is that they’ve picked up a whole new set of skills and provided an opportunity for their community to get involved as well. Our staff are keen to buy tickets themselves so they can come along too!”

Youthline is a nationwide organisation that provides development opportunities, counselling and support services and for young people and families. The money raised will be used to fund the 24 hour 0800 phone and free txt helplines that are utilised by more than 15,000 people per month.
