INTRODUCING ‘TE ARA TAIOHI’Te Ara Taiohi (Bicultural Footsteps) is a book that has been developed to celebrate Youthline’s commitment to biculturalism and diversity.
Published this week, the book features and explains the eight poupou (carved wall posts) in the Whanau Room at Youthline House (13, Maidstone Street, Ponsonby, Auckland).
Copies of the book are to be presented to a distinguished group of Youthline supporters by the Prime Minister, the Hon. John Key at 10.00 am on Thursday 28 January, during a ceremony at Youthline House to mark the organisation’s 40th anniversary year (see accompanying release).
The poupou are the work of a team led by celebrated carver, Eddie Ngatai (Ngati Porou). Each of the carvings represents an idea. However, as with much significant art, the layers of meaning will lay in the eye of the beholder, who can add his or her personal interpretation to the images.
An expert on traditional Maori weaving, Judy Te Hiwi, organised a separate team to make a number of tukutuku (latticework panels) to go between the poupou. A woven flax design was also made as a wall hanging, decorated with feathers, paua shells and three small kete (kits) to inspire continual learning
Youthline regards the Treaty of Waitangi as a fundamental document in the establishment of an equitable society in Aotearoa/New Zealand and has worked actively to build an environment where the value of diversity is respected.
