Youthline are inviting young people aged 12-24 to have their say on sexual health. With over 1000 online surveys and 30 focus groups across the North Island, Youthline are working to gather a youth voice about sexual health to prepare a report to the Ministry of Health.
The focus groups and surveys aim to gather young people’s opinions about what they see as the key sexual health issues for young people, how they would like sexual health to be promoted, how they would like health providers to communicate with them about sexual health and how they would like parents to communicate with them about sexual health.
“We are not trying to find out about young people’s personal experiences but rather what they see are the key issues and ideas for young people their age and it’s really important that they have a forum to share their views on such an important topic,” says project coordinator Amber Davies.
Young people who complete the survey have the opportunity to win an iPod or digital camera and those who participate in focus groups receive a movie voucher or pre pay phone voucher. Young people can also continue to post their ideas about the topic on the Urge/Whakamanawa forum.
“We really want as many young people as possible to have access to sharing their views and will be making sure we run groups and give out surveys in rural areas too,” says Amber.
Amber says that so far young people have had a positive response to the project and are pleased to be asked about the topic.
“It’s amazing that once we get the topic started, they have so many great ideas and thoughts.”
